World championships begin today

It's Sweepstakes day as the eighth annual National Barrel Horse Association World Championships opens at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.

There's a chance -- only one chance -- for participating riders to pick up a little extra cash before the division competition begins Tuesday. And, it gives horses a brief time to become accustomed to the civic center dirt and surroundings.

Beginning at 8 a.m. today, the rider whose horse makes it around the three-barrel course in the fastest time during the daylong competition will reap the reward.

In contrast to division competition where riders have two runs to post a time, the sweepstakes is a no-holds-barred, one-run, winner takes all.

The NBHA World Championships, which has 1,359 entries this year, continue through Saturday night.
