Colette Cassedy calls her team a bunch of nomads. Well for one more week, they're on the road again.
Evans defeated Wayne County 11-1 in Game One and then defeated Hardaway 1-0 in Game Two in the state sectionals at Diamond Lakes on Saturday. The Lady Knights advance to the eight-team state finals Oct. 19-21 at the Columbus, Ga., Softball Complex.
"This is nice," Cassedy said. "Our region tournament we went through was just like state. Maybe last week prepared us for this."
Adrienne Daniels pitched a pair of one-hitters for Evans to help lead her team back to the finals. Evans and Hardaway were locked in a scoreless battle until the Knights pushed across a run in the top of the fifth.
Meanwhile, bitter rivals Lakeside and Greenbrier faced each other in an elimination game in the losers bracket. The Lady Wolfpack pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third and held on for a 2-1 win to become the second local team to advance to the state finals.
"This is not the team I wanted to play," said Greenbrier coach Garrett Black, whose team was 3-2 against Lakeside this season. "It's tough to beat a good team three times. They're well-coached and they've got a good group of girls. We just got one today."
Earlier in the day, Lakeside lost its first game to Heritage 1-0 and trailed Mays 3-2 in the seventh inning of Game Two. But the Lady Panthers got runners at second and third with two outs and Nichole Bennett's fly ball to center was misplayed, scoring two runs.
Greenbrier defeated Jones County 6-2 before dropping a 6-0 contest to Shaw.
In Class AAA action, Harlem defeated Effingham County 9-7 in game one before losing to Harris County 20-0. The Lady Bulldogs trailed Savannah Christian 14-5 in the sixth inning of the deciding game three before rallying for six runs. However, Harlem ran out of gas and fell 16-11.
Cross Creek defeated Southwest Macon 6-0 in game one, but lost to Dublin 3-1 in game two. In game three, the Lady Razorbacks made four errors and were eliminated by Effingham County 9-1.
Westside was eliminated in two games by a combined 49-2 score.
Other teams qualifying for the state finals: are Eagles Landing, Hardaway and Lowndes in Class AAAAA; Heritage, Shaw and Columbus in Class AAAA; and Harris County, Dublin, Effingham County and Savannah Christian in Class AAA.
