A look at No. 1 Georgia Southern Eagles (5-1, 4-0 Southern Conference) before they play host to No. 5 Appalachian State (4-1, 3-0) today (3:30, Comcast Sports Southeast -- Cable Channel 6):
This is the game Georgia Southern has been waiting for since last year when Appalachian State upset Southern 17-16, handing the Eagles their only conference loss. The winner of this game takes over first place in the Southern Conference.
Appalachian State has won four of the past five and five of the past eight meetings and leads the series 8-5-1. The Mountaineers are the only conference team against which Georgia Southern coach Paul Johnson has a losing record (1-2).
Appalachian State -- RB Karim Razzick (Jr., 5-11, 196); QB David Reeves (Sr., 6-0, 200); LB Joe Best (Sr., 5-10, 237).
Georgia Southern -- QB J.R. Revere (Jr., 5-11, 184); CB Lavar Rainey (Sr., 5-10, 183); FB Adrian Peterson (Jr., 5-10, 212).
When Appalachian State has the ball: The Mountaineers will try to get its passing game going by using Razzick on the ground. This will be another stiff test for the Georgia Southern defense.
When Georgia Southern has the ball: Although Peterson rushed for more than 100 yards in last year's loss, he wasn't a factor, Appalachian State kept the fullback out of the end zone, but don't expect the same this year.
