Shooting suspect captured in hospital

AIKEN - An Aiken man sought in a weekend shooting was captured in Augusta while receiving treatment at University Hospital, authorities said Monday.

Joshua Randall Weeks, 23, of Edgefield Highway, Aiken was detained by Richmond County authorities, and was being held on charges of assault and battery with intent to kill. He was awaiting extradition on Monday to Aiken County.

Mr. Weeks is accused of going to the home of his estranged wife Sunday morning and confronting her new boyfriend, said Lt. Michael Frank with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. A relative of the woman, 19-year-old Daniel Hammeck, tried to defend the boyfriend and attacked Mr. Weeks with a baseball bat.

Mr. Weeks pulled out a handgun and shot Mr. Hammeck in the left arm. He then left the home, located at 515 Old Barnwell Road in Aiken.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Department detained Mr. Weeks when he sought medical treatment in Augusta for the baseball assault. Mr. Hammeck was treated for the gunshot wound at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
