A look at the No. 1 Georgia Southern Eagles (5-1, 4-0 Southern Conference) four days before they play host to No. 5 Appalachian State (4-1, 3-0) on Saturday(3:30 p.m.):
Appalachian State's upset of previously undefeated Furman on Saturday vaulted the Mountaineers to No. 5 in this week's USA Today/ESPN Division I-AA coaches poll and the Sports Network poll.
WR Derrick Owens (knee) is probable.
Georgia Southern coach Paul Johnson is still upset about his team committing 14 penalties for 121 yards in Saturday's 42-24 victory at Western Carolina. Penalties cost the Eagles two touchdowns in the game.
This is the game Georgia Southern players and fans have looked forward to all season. The Mountaineers hung Southern with a 17-16 loss in Boone, N.C., last season, and the Eagles are anxious for revenge. As it has for the past three seasons, the road to the Southern Conference title goes through Appalachian State.
"It was disappointing the way we played." -- Johnson, after Saturday's sloppy victory.
