Armed with search warrants, Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents swooped down on city offices Wednesday morning, gathering information about the fire department.
In a press release, District Attorney Danny Craig wrote that the GBI searches were authorized by a judge and based on information provided by the special grand jury probe of government operations.
"That information established probable cause to believe that certain crimes had been committed by an employee, or employees, of the Richmond County Fire Department," Mr. Craig wrote.
GBI agents seized paper and computer records Wednesday from the fire department as well as the purchasing and finance departments.
The special grand jury, appointed last November after two regular grand jury sessions ended with calls for thorough examination into allegations of fraud and waste, will ask its presiding judge to authorize a comprehensive audit of the fire department and corresponding records filed with the city's purchasing department.
