Postcard from Sydney

Yeee-haw, Australian pride is running wild as their Olympians are off to a good start. They won some medals the first day and had a strong showing in several sports. But even if their athletes don't win medals, Aussies are proud of hosting the Olympics. They like showing off their country to the world.

Even the children are excited about it. I saw three of them perched on a ledge watching the women's triathlon Saturday and they were having a ball. They yelled, they waved a scarf, they acted silly. And they're not even in college yet.

Jenna O'Toole, 12, performed in the choir during opening ceremonies, though she didn't like her costume. She lives in Sydney.

Rosanna Maeder, 11, and her brother Tim Maeder, 9, live in Adelaide. They came with their mother to see the Olympics. Rosanna told me they will see hockey, basketball, volleyball and athletics. "And boxing," said Tim as his sister grimaced.

"But really, we're fond of everything," said Jenna.

They're especially fond of a three-week summer break. After that they'll go until Christmas and then get another month off.

Cheerio for now,

Dennis
