Facility posts animals on Internet

Columbia County's animal shelter is venturing into cyberspace.

The county's Web designer - Red Door Design - has added a Pets of the Week page to the county's site.

"I haven't looked at it to see how many times it has been hit," County Animal Control Manager Linda Fulmer said. By midday Monday, the site had received more than 300 visits.

Web surfers can get to the site by clicking on the link on Columbia County's homepage: www.co.columbia.ga.us.

On Monday, the Pets of the Week page featured Maggie - a mixed terrier who has been adopted - a mixed Chow puppy and a kitten.

Officials are working on getting a digital camera for animal control workers.

"That way we can take picture ourselves and get them on there," Mrs. Fulmer said. "Then they'll be current."

Strays have been flowing steadily into the shelter since Richmond County officials stopped taking animals at their shelter after an outbreak of distemper in late July.

At one point, there were more than 80 dogs in kennels designed for about 60 canines. On Monday, the shelter's count was 31 dogs and 27 cats.
