CHARLESTON, WVa. -- Luis Garcia's single in the 10th inning powered the Augusta GreenJackets to a 3-2 South Atlantic League baseball victory over the Charleston Alley Cats on Monday. It was Augusta's eighth straight victory and reduced its magic number to 3 for clinching the Southern Division championship.
Augusta got an infield hit from designated hitter Brady Williams off Charleston reliever Nate Field to start the 10th inning. After a walk to second baseman Chas GTerni, Lew Ford advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt.
Shortstop Freddy Sanchez drew a walk to load the bases. Justin Headley flied out, but Williams was unable to score. Garcia followed with a clean single that scored Williams with the go-ahead run. Terni was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second base.
Charleston had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game, but Augusta rallied the following half-inning to tie the game.
Williams was the spark for the GreenJackets (41-22 in the second half), getting two hits in four at-bats and scoring a pair of runs.
The four-game series continues tonight in Charleston.
