In about the time it takes the average person to read the editorials on this page, more than one woman will die of breast cancer in this country. Breast cancer kills a woman every 11 minutes.
Breast cancer, which accounts for 39 percent of all cancer diagnosed in women, is perhaps one of the most feared, and for good reason: One in eight women will get breast cancer.
That's why the University Hospital's Breast Health Center is good news for Augustans. The center will give patients a team approach to health care, with specialists in radiology, pathology, surgery and oncology, under one roof.
The center will take a lot of stress out of the entire process of diagnosis and treatment for women, and it's bound to help raise the awareness level in our community about breast cancer and the importance of early detection and treatment.
University Hospital is to be commended for taking the step to make breast cancer a priority at the institution, and for streamlining the system for patients who are understandably scared and stressed.
