Outdoors calendar



All the listed events are open to the public, although membership in some organizations may be required.

August 26:

A fly-tying clinic sponsored by the CSRA Flyfishing Association will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brandon Wilde Studio. The association's monthly meeting will be held Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Brandon Wilde Clubhouse.

Sept. 10:

Fort Gordon Sportsman's Club will conduct a 20-target tournament (hunting bows only). For more information, call Fred Perry at 791-5078.

Sept. 18:

Outdoor and environmental issues will be discussed at the annual "homecoming meeting" of the Sierra Club's Savannah River Group meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Church, 3501 Walton Way. Call 863-2324 for details.

Sept. 23:

An Open Team Striper Tournament benefiting the South Carolina Wildlife Federation will begin at safe light the morning of Sept. 23 until 5 p.m. at the Dorn Boat Landing in McCormick County, S.C. Entry fee is $80 per boat, with optional $20 big-fish pot. Call Ed Lepley, 860-0812, or Richard Smith, 860-3789, for information.

September 29-30:

An archery-only deer hunt will be held at Bussey Point WMA along Thurmond Lake. Limit is one deer, doe or quality buck (four or more points on one side). Contact the Army Corps of Engineers for more information at 800-533-3478.

Sept. 30:

The March of Dimes Bass Tournament will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., Sept. 30, at Fort Gordon Recreation Area at Thurmond Lake. The two-person boat tournament has a $60 per boat fee and an optional $10 big bass award. Contact the March of Dimes at 733-8438 for more information.

Oct. 5-8:

Fort Gordon Sportsman's Club will conduct an endurance horseback ride at Leitner Lake. For more information, call Fred Perry at 791-5078 or 833-2834 (cell phone).

Oct. 14-15:

Georgia Waterfowl Association, an Augusta-based conservation group, will hold the Georgia Waterfowl Expo at the Wolf Creek Gun Club in Atlanta. The event includes air rifle tournaments for youth, retriever workshops, waterfowl management classes and other events. Call 800-673-6831 for information.
