Leap of faith

The Army's Golden Knights parachute team will demonstrate precision jumping Saturday at the National Science Center's Fort Discovery.

The jumpers will have to be precise: their target landing site is a small bus turnaround lot adjacent to the science center, wedged behind the Savannah River levee and Riverwalk Augusta and Reynolds Street.

The Golden Knights will make their jumps at 1 and 4:30 p.m. as part of a back-to-school festival at Fort Discovery. The event begins at 10 a.m. and features concerts by the Army Signal Corps' rock band Ground Zero; rock-climbing, yo-yo, Hula-Hoop, jump-rope and glass-blowing demonstrations; face-painting; and clowns.

Fort Discovery is a partnership between the Army and the private sector. The Golden Knights first visited the science center when they were in Augusta in April for an air show.

"They had the best time. They said they sure would like to come back and jump for us," said Kathi Dimmock, the science center's marketing director.

Other attractions include a 24-foot climbing wall, used as an Army recruiting tool. The Golden Knights will also have an exhibit.

Ground Zero performs from 2 to 4 p.m.

Tickets will be $4 for adults and $3 for children, seniors and active military for the festival, which is half off regular admission. For more information, call 821-0200.
