Overtime: Elson helps key Britain's win over U.S.

Augusta State's Jamie Elson helped his Great Britain & Ireland teammates to victory in the Palmer Cup by defeating Augusta's John Engler 1-up in afternoon singles play Thursday at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in England.

In the annual Ryder Cup-style match pitting college players against each other, Elson scored two of the GBI team's points in a 12'-11' win. He teamed with Max Harris to beat Georgia's Nick Cassini and Andy Sanders in four-ball play, 3 and 2, Tuesday.

It's the first time the U.S. has lost in the four-year event.

Engler, a rising Clemson senior and Richmond Academy graduate, won his only match during the Thursday morning singles, when he defeated Simon Robinson 3 and 2. Engler paired with former Clemson teammate Jonathan Byrd to halve their Wednesday four-ball match with Phillip Rowe and Robinson.

Elson lost to Byrd 1-up in the morning singles on Wednesday.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

USC Aiken added former Augusta State graduate assistant Tracy Abromavage to head coach Phil Stern's staff. Abromavage will take on the duties of full-time assistant coach and head women's cross country coach.

JUNIOR GOLF:

Thomson's Wren Fowler fired a 4-under 68 and was alone in third place, three strokes off the lead, after the first round of the Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic at White Columns Golf Club in Alpharetta, Ga.

Martin Cataliota of Ramsey, N.J., held the first-round lead with a 65, followed by Stephen Newren of Salt Lake City.

Augusta's Zadoc Williams followed his opening-round 72 with a 2-over 74 in the Henry-Griffitts Rome Junior Classic at Coosa Country Club. Williams' 146 total is seven strokes off the lead. Tyler Kassinger of Evans is at 153 after two rounds.
