THOMSON - Mr. Hubert Hughes, 78, of Carroll Street, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at University Hospital, Augusta.
The funeral will be at 4 p.m. today at Gibson First Baptist Church, Gibson, with the Rev. Ernest Sikes and Dr. Gary Hadden officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hughes, a native of Glascock County, was an Army veteran of World War II and was the owner of Hughes Auto Sales. He was a former Glascock County Commissioner and chairman, former member of Glascock County Board of Education, director of Brier Creek Soil and Water Conservation District and a member of Gibson Masonic Lodge 257, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 5570 and Gibson Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, former chairman and chairman of Brotherhood.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel W. Hughes; a son, Thomas Hubert Hughes, Charleston, S.C.; a daughter, Angela H. Pittman, Warner Robins; four brothers, D.C. Hughes, George Otis Hughes, Robert Hughes and Gene Hughes, all of Thomson; a sister, Bessie Everson, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Van Hughes, Carroll Hughes, Bob Hughes, David Hughes, Mark Hughes, Lindy Williams, James H. Blackman III and Anthony Clark.
