Clemson fans aren't alone in their sky-high aspirations for the 2000 Tigers. Sports Illustrated lifted those expectations by ranking Clemson No. 8 in its college football preview edition released Wednesday.
Georgia, looking for its first SEC title since 1982, is ranked seventh, just ahead of the Tigers. Georgia Tech is ranked 33rd, third in the ACC behind Florida State (No. 2) and Clemson. South Carolina, looking to snap its 21-game losing skid, is ranked 73rd, lowest among the SEC's 12 teams.
Sports Illustrated's lofty projection for Clemson apparently is based on the Tigers' schedule, which includes seven home games, including back-to-back contests against The Citadel (Sept. 2) and Missouri (Sept. 9) to open the season.
Clemson is ranked higher than Miami (10), Florida (11) and Tennessee (14). Nebraska was atop SI's list.
