Mr. James "Alf" Whitaker, 93, of Plemmons Road, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at his residence.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Kiokee Baptist Chapel with the Rev. Wes Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown.
Mr. Whitaker, a native of Columbia County, had retired as a machine operator from Columbia County Roads and Bridges Department and was a member of Kiokee Baptist Church.
The family said: "He installed a strong work ethic in all of his children and he was a good provider for his children. He will be missed."
Survivors include two sons, Carlton E. Whitaker and William A. Whitaker, both of Appling; four daughters, Joyce Ross, Martinez, Margie Linnenkohl, Dearing, Florence McGlamery, Statesboro, and Mary Reeves, Harlem; and 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Starling Funeral Home, Harlem.
