Heavy trading day pushes stocks up
NEW YORK - Stocks ended a difficult second quarter with a burst of buying Friday.
The Dow Jones industrial average finished up 49.85 at 10,447.89, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 88.88 to 3,966.11.
Advancers barely outpaced decliners on the NYSE, reflecting investor anxiety that's been evident for months. It was the third heaviest trading day ever on the exchange.
Slow spending signals change
WASHINGTON - Americans spent cautiously in May for the second month in a row, another tentative sign that the robust economy may be slowing.
Consumer spending rose by just 0.2 percent in both April and May, the Commerce Department said Friday, which is vital because personal spending accounts for two-thirds of economic activity.
