Athletes. Movie buffs. Actors. Students.
Those are just a few of the many traits to describe members of the current Xtreme Teen Board.
Xtreme is a vehicle for teens to voice opinions, discuss issues and find out what's happening in the community. Each member of the board brings something to the group.
Now's your chance to become a part of the weekly teen section.
This year, we're having Xtreme Xtravaganza, a party to recruit next year's teen board. The event will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at The Warehouse, a new teen club downtown.
Xtreme Xtravaganza will offer teens an opportunity to learn more about the section, socialize and enjoy refreshments and entertainment.
In addition to talking to present and former teen board members and filling out applications for the teen board, guests can play interactive games and win prizes. Some teens will be chosen by raffle to model for Your Style, the weekly fashion feature in the section.
As well as being able to attend the Xtreme Xtravaganza party, teens who wish to apply for a space on the teen board can apply online on The Augusta Chronicle.
The teen board consists of area youth who serve as a sounding board for the teen reporter and the newspaper in general. Duties include attendance at a monthly meeting, where the section is critiqued and current issues are discussed. Board members provide story ideas, contacts and sometimes participate in photo shoots. They write movie and CD reviews, opinion columns and sometimes cover local events.
Aspiring reporters, photographers, graphic designers and illustrators are encouraged to apply.
Here are some guidelines when filling out an application:
Please write legibly.
You may use an additional sheet of paper to complete the application, but please don't go overboard.
Include samples of your work if you're a high school reporter, photographer, graphic designer or illustrator.
The teen board is open to youths who will be in grades 9-12 for the 2000-2001 school year. It is open to all public, private and home-schooled students in the newspaper's coverage area.
Finalists are required to submit a writing sample (opinion column, movie or CD review, for example). They'll also take part in a short interview.
Space at Xtreme Xtravaganza is limited. To reserve a ticket, call 823-3340 or stop by the offices of The Augusta Chronicle at 725 Broad St., 4143 Columbia Road in Martinez or 123 Pendleton St. in Aiken. Tickets also are available at The Warehouse.
