Carl Josh Durden of the North Augusta PAL boxing team is the only South Carolina boxer advancing to the National Junior Olympic Championships in Marquette, Mich., June 20-24.
Durden won the 15-16 years, 112-pound title Saturday night in the Southeast Coast Regional in Kingsland, Ga., by defeating Eric Taylor of Kingsland when the referee stopped the bout in the third round.
North Augustan Clint Tarpley won his semifinal bout over Augusta's John Drye in the 15-16, 156-pound division, but suffered a broken rib and was unable to compete in the finals.
Aiken Boxing Club member Elan DeLancy became the unopposed champion in the 13-14 year, 60-pound division. Aiken's Tremain Murray (15-16, 147 pounds) in the semifinals, as did North Augusta PAL's Ryan Busbee (13-14, 112 pounds) and Noah Newman III (15-16, 125 pounds) in the semifinals.
North Augusta's Todd DaWayne Smith lost in the 13-14 class when the referee stopped the contest in the second round, and Lincoln Antonio Kemp lost on a split decision. Josh Faigler (15-16, 178 pounds) and superheavy Todd Busbee lost in Friday's first round.
