Augusta's Denise Maraetes, vying for the vacant International Boxing Association's junior welterweight, lost a controversial split decision to Kathy Collins Friday night in Tulsa, Okla.
All three judges score the 10 round fight 96-94. Two Oklahoma-based judges gave the edge to Collins, who hails from Plainview, N.Y. The IBA judge had Moraetes winning.
Fans at the Adams Mark hotel booed the decision. Collins was outpunched in the fight.
"Although we accept the decision, we do not agree with it," said Tom Moraetes, Denise's trainer, manager and husband.
Maraetes' record dropped to 10-2; her only other loss was a unanimous decision to Sumya Anani.
The was the second bout between Maraetes and Collins, the first coming in the 1995 New York Golden Gloves tournament at Madison Square Garden, which Maraetes won in a unanimous decision.
Tom Maraetes, said the IBA offered both fighters a rematch in three months, an offer the Maraetes camp accepted.
