WASHINGTON -- Some America Online users were unable to sign on to their Internet accounts Wednesday night because of a software problem that lasted for three hours, a company spokesman said.
Describing the problem as "sporadic," Nicholas Graham said it had been fixed by late Wednesday. He said he didn't know how many users had been affected, but the problem lasted from about 9 p.m. to shortly before midnight EDT.
Although AOL said it did not have details, telephone complaints suggested the problem was mostly on the West Coast.
"We're still in the process of diagnosing what has occurred," Graham said. He added that many AOL users had no problems signing on.
Dulles, Va.-based AOL, the nation's largest Internet service provider, has about 23 million customers.
