Group to nominate executive director

Augusta Neighborhood Improvement Corp.'s personnel subcommittee is expected to nominate an executive director Friday.

There are four finalists for the position held by interim Executive Director Charles DeVaney. There were 15 applicants for the job.

State Rep. Robin Williams, an ANIC board member, identified the finalists as Robert Cooks, Sheila Durden, Elbert Jenkins and Scott Williams. Mr. DeVaney, citing a career change, withdrew his application for the job last week.

Augusta Neighborhood Improvement Corp. is a nonprofit economic development group charged with rehabilitating the city's low-income neighborhoods and building on the city's economic foundation.

This year, the group will oversee $10 million in state money. The executive director will serve as day-to-day manager of the corporation.

Mr. Cooks, of Stone Mountain, Ga., is director of lending and equity for the Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership. His resume lists a stint as a multifamily development loan officer for the Georgia Housing and Finance Authority. A Delaware State University graduate, Mr. Cooks has a bachelor's degree in marketing and a minor in business administration.

Ms. Durden, of Decatur, Ga., is former executive director of Cathedral of Blessings CDC. She was a community resource coordinator for the Atlanta Housing Authority, and a grant administrator for Clark Atlanta University and Carver Homes Resident Management Corp.

She holds a paralegal degree from Davidson County Community College and a bachelor's degree in sociology from Johnson C. Smith University.

Mr. Jenkins, also of Decatur, is a management consultant for Price Waterhouse LLP in Atlanta. His duties include serving as a liaison and expert for Empowerment Zone/Enterprise Community Initiative in the South.

A former city manager and planning director in Hobson, Ala., Mr. Jenkins is president and owner of ELJA Associates of Atlanta. ELJA provides business development services to communities, businesses and government agencies. He is a graduate of Tuskegee Institute.

Scott Williams, of Augusta, is a general partner for Williams & Shaw Holdings Inc. of Atlanta, a mortgage and real estate development company.

He was director of special events for Images USA of Atlanta, an international marketing and advertising company. Mr. Williams is a graduate of Morehouse College.
