Lee Co. player killed in car crash

Less than 36 hours after making the defensive play of the Georgia Class AAA baseball series with Greenbrier High School, Lee County center fielder Matthew Meeks died in a single-car accident.

Meeks, 16, died of injuries sustained after losing control of his truck and crashing into a tree early Sunday on a rural Lee County road.

Lee County coach Rob Williams said Meeks was on his way home from visiting his girlfriend.

"We don't know if a deer jumped out and he overcompensated (to avoid it), Williams said.

In Friday's opening game of the best-of-three playoffs, which Lee County won at Greenbrier, Meeks reached over the fence to make a spectacular catch, robbing the Wolfpack's Bradley Key of a home run in the third inning. Lee County won 8-0.

In the sixth inning of Game 2, Meeks had a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning that tied the game at 10-10. Lee County went on to win 11-10, dethroning Greenbrier, which had won the last three state AAA championships.

Lee County is scheduled to play Marist in the state semifinals this week.
