Fort Gordon choir to make first recording

Voices of Faith choir is within a day of making its first CD, and the excitement grows with each passing hour, members say.

After months of preparation -- from writing the music to getting producers -- one singer is starting to dream about it. "I dreamed Michael Jackson walked in and took a seat" during the recording session, said Maggie McDonald. "It's time to get it over."

The gospel choir from Fort Gordon's Faith Chapel will be the first from a congregation to be recorded live at a military installation, said Chaplain (Maj.) Bryan Walker. The recording at Signal Theater on Barnes Avenue will take the place of the 11 a.m. service Sunday.

The choir wants community support -- the more people come out to hear it, the better Voices of Faith will sound on the CD, Ms. McDonald said.

About 1,000 CDs and 1,000 cassette tapes of the recording, titled Anointed and Appointed, will be available in about three months. The project will be produced by Faith Gospel Service. Studio South Productions of Evans is the recording company.

Anointed, an evangelism tool, will be distributed free at Fort Gordon and will be offered to other posts, Maj. Walker said.

The initial order, including production, costs $5,000 to $7,000. It was paid for with proceeds from car washes and bake sales and "offering plate" money, he said.

The 12-year-old choir sings for post and off-post events. "They work very hard. The CD is a way to bless somebody else," he said.

The singers are military personnel, either active or retired, or family members, said Ms. McDonald.

The songs were written by choir director Connie Moore, organist Angela Arrington and bass player Gene Beverly. The choir usually sings three-part harmony, although some soloists will also perform Sunday.

Once the recording session is under way, the singers may be stopped from time to time to correct the sound, said Ms. McDonald. "We aren't going to just run through one song after another." However, producers say the session should be over by 2 p.m.
