Mr. John Emmett Gattis, 82, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at University Hospital.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Wade and Dr. Wofford B. Caughman Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Westover Memorial Park.
Mr. Gattis, a native of Sumter County, had retired as a sales manager from Georgia-Carolina Manufacturing Co. and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Hill Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and was an usher, deacon and former chairman of the board of deacons.
The family said: "He was a devoted husband and father. He took all of his responsibilities seriously, but his family always came first."
Survivors include his wife, Ernestine Gattis; three daughters, Susan G. Fouraker, West Chester, Ohio, Jo Ellen G. Walker, Milledgeville, and Becky G. Fordham, Griffin; a brother, Thomas C. Gattis, Waycross; two sisters, Vesta G. Welsh, Fort Meyers, Fla., and Bertha G. Large, Detroit; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hill Baptist Church, 2165 Kings Way, Augusta, GA 30904.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Platt's Funeral Home, Crawford Avenue.
