Across the area: Pedestrian hit near Augusta National

A New Castle, Ind., woman was hit by a car Sunday morning as she crossed Washington Road heading to enter the Augusta National Golf Club.

Elizabeth Miller, 80, had already crossed three lanes of traffic at about 7:20 a.m. when she was struck by a 1993 Ford Thunderbird driven by Farrah McCullough, 16, of Martinez, according to a Richmond County sheriff's report.

The front driver's-side bumper of the car struck Ms. Miller on her side, police said. Ms. Miller was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital with a possible hip fracture, said Valerie Spratlin, spokeswoman for Rural/Metro Ambulance.

Ms. Miller was found to be at fault for failing to cross at a crosswalk, but no charges have been filed against her, Deputy Mark Chestang said.

The third round of the Masters Tournament was suspended Saturday evening because of a two-hour rain delay. Play began at about 8 a.m. Sunday, drawing spectators to the golf course earlier than usual.

County manager's daughter dies

SAVANNAH -- The youngest daughter of the Chatham County manager died after a car crash in Oconee County.

Tisha Abolt, a 24-year-old University of Georgia graduate student, died early Saturday at an Athens hospital. She was driving with her dog when she pulled into a car's path, the Georgia State Patrol said.

Ms. Abolt was the daughter of Chatham County Manager Russ Abolt.

"She is the most unselfish person you could ever meet," said Robbie Pace, Ms. Abolt's best friend of seven years. "She put everybody before her."

Ms. Abolt was studying social work. The university has canceled social work classes today and planned a memorial service for 11 a.m. today.
