Caine award spells contest win

More than 150 readers entered our Oscars contest. One emerged victorious.

Only Lisa Thomason of Evans correctly named the Academy Award winners in the top six categories. Twenty-six readers tied arts and entertainment writer Steven Uhles by picking five out of six Oscar winners.

"I read about the contest in the paper and then jumped online while my son was taking a nap," said Mrs. Thomason, stay-at-home mother of a 13-month-old boy.

The key to her victory was selecting Michael Caine as best supporting actor, choosing him over Tom Cruise, the candidate Mr. Uhles and many other participants in our contest predicted would win.

Mrs. Thomason selected Mr. Caine even though she didn't see The Cider House Rules, the movie for which he was nominated.

"I've seen him in so much, I figured he was the veteran and would pull it out, so to speak," Mrs. Thomason said. "And I loved his acceptance speech. He was so gracious and appreciative of the other nominees. ... I thought hey, I picked the right guy."'

In fact, Mrs. Thomason hasn't seen any of the movies nominated for Academy Awards. Taking care of a new baby this year has kept her and her husband, Kelly, from making it to the theater as often as they'd like. But she based her decisions on what she read about the nominees and on past performances. She gets $100 for winning the contest.

Here's a list of people who selected five out of six Academy Award winners:
