Mr. Richard L. Gilliland Sr., 64, of Rhodes Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road, with the Rev. Joe Conner officiating. Burial will be in Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown.
Mr. Gilliland, a native of New Vienna, Ohio, was owner of Richard's Fence Co. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of American Legion Post 178, Veterans of Foreign Wars 649 and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 126 and was a member of Fleming Baptist Church.
The family said: "His love of life and sense of humor brightened the life of many. His caring and compassionate `Golden Rule' way of life touched all."
Survivors include his wife, Joan Pardue Gilliland; two sons, Richard L. Gilliland Jr., Los Angeles, and James L. Gilliland, Martinez; his mother, Annie C. Gilliland, New Vienna; a brother, Robert Gilliland, Martinsville, Ohio; three sisters, Mary McCollough, Atlanta, and Sarah Drake and Daisy Lisk, both of New Vienna; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be John Stratton Sr., Rod Ellis, Jim Broom, Jesse Phelps, Bill Warlick and John Sullivan.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 2623 Washington Road, Augusta, GA 30904; or to Fleming Baptist Church Building Fund, 3027 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta, GA 30906.
