In regard to the Feb. 13 letter, "State funding children's drug use," I cannot begin to tell you how tired I am of people who have no experience with attention deficit disorder spouting off about how horrible it is to treat these children with drugs.
I do have personal experience with this disorder and I know first-hand how damaging it can be to a child if left untreated. My son has gone from feeling stupid to being very proud of the fact that for the last 4' years he has been a straight "A" student.
This was not something my husband or I just made up because we did not want to take the time to help our son. After two years of effort and frustration we took our son to a doctor who did extensive tests and evaluations before this diagnosis was made. Yes, he takes a drug -- under very strict guidelines and for school only. It has made all the difference in the world in his attitude and his opinion of himself.
And by the way, I don't know where the idea that this is "state- sponsored" came from. We would have loved some support from somewhere, anywhere. Instead we've "sponsored" everything from our own pockets.
