Boys, girls region tourneys continue tonight



The regular high school basketball season is over, but region basketball tournaments are in full gear.

In Region 3-AAA, the two subregion champions in both boys' and girls' play were determined earlier this week in Statesboro and Dublin. Now the region tournament action shifts to Richmond Academy tonight and Saturday night.

Josey's girls meet subregion A champion Statesboro today at 4 p.m., while the subregion B champion Glenn Hills Lady Spartans meet Thomson in the 7 p.m. game.

In boys action, subregion A champion Statesboro meets Dublin at 5:30 p.m. while subregion B champion Glenn Hills tackles Thomson in the late game at 8:30 p.m.

The winners of tonight's boys and girls games meet Saturday night for the Region 3-AAA championship and the region's top seed. The region runner-up will earn the region's No. 2 seed while the losers of tonight's game will play for the No. 3 and No. 4 seed in next week's first round of the state tournament Saturday.

The Region 2-AAAA tournament also continues today and Saturday in Macon as well as the Region 3-AA tournament in Eatonton. The Region 7-A tournament moves to its second day on Saturday with the championships scheduled for Tuesday night at Athens Academy.

STATE WRESTLING TOURNEY:

The Georgia High School state wrestling tournaments begin today at four sites around the state. The Class AAAA will be held at McEachern High in Power Springs; Class AAA will be held at the Columbus Civic Center; Class AA will be held at South Forsyth; and Riverside Military in Gainesville will host the Class A tournament, which continues through Saturday.

Screven County's Jessica Lonon set a new girls single-season record at Screven County with 535 points this season, breaking the old mark of 533 set by Martha Moates-Lee in 1970.
