A surprise winter storm iced bridges, closed schools and offered some snow accumulation Monday throughout the Augusta region.
Students were sent home in Columbia County at 1:30 p.m. after the county's Emergency Management Agency reported several accidents from vehicles sliding off roadways into ditches. Richmond County schools were also closed Monday afternoon.
Some key trouble spots included Little River Bridge, Columbia Road, Fury's Ferry Road at The Pass, the Pollards Corner intersection, Hereford Farm Road at Columbia Road and Blanchard Road, according to safety officials.
Richmond County officials were evaluating bridges and overpasses, specifically River Watch Parkway, for icing. No major accidents had been reported Monday afternoon, said Maj. Larry Vinson of the Richmond County Sheriff's Department.
"Snow and sleet continue to fall in Columbia County making driving very hazardous," said EMA Director Pam Tucker. "Motorists are requested to slow down and use extreme caution."
Schools Superintendent Tommy Price said Monday that officials would probably decide tonight whether if schools would be closed Tuesday.
