After nearly a year and a half of shopping, chopping and cooking, readers have named their favorite recipes from Augusta Chronicle food columnist Karin Calloway.
Mrs. Calloway's Quick Cooking column has appeared every Wednesday since Aug. 5, 1998. Each week, she provides instructions for preparing a fast, but homey, meal.
Readers cast more than 400 votes in our informal survey. The results were a bit of a surprise -- even for Mrs. Calloway.
Three dishes tied for first place with 19 votes apiece. They were Easy Beef Burgundy, Bourbon Pork Tenderloin with Sour Cream Mustard Sauce, and Portobello Burgers with Red Pepper Mayonnaise.
The pork tenderloin is a versatile dish that can serve as an entree or an item in a heavy hors d'oeuvre buffet.
"It's so funny because it's my best friend's recipe," Mrs. Calloway said. "My friend Martha (Long) makes it all the time."
Mrs. Calloway was also surprised to see Portobello Burgers ranked so high.
"I thought it was kind of out there," she said. "I see people at the grocery store, and they comment on the recipes they like. And that's not one of them."
Mrs. Calloway said she was surprised that the "Not" Lasagna wasn't at the top of the list.
"It's so easy that it's almost not a recipe," she said.
The dish was still very popular, receiving 14 votes.
Even Mrs. Calloway's son Tripp got involved. His favorite meal is the Shepherd's Pie, which drew 17 votes and tied for second with Three Cheese Spinach Pizza and Quick Corn Chowder.
Mrs. Calloway said her son campaigned for his favorite dish.
"Tripp went to school and told all his teachers to vote for the Shepherd's Pie," Mrs. Calloway said. "He is going to love this."
