GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Budget cuts have forced Lander to drop men's cross country and women's tennis beginning next academic year.
Athletic director Jeff May says the NCAA Division II school, the smallest college in the 12-member Peach Belt Athletic Conference, will better give the remaining nine teams "that we will continue to sponsor a chance to remain competitive."
May said men's cross country and women's tennis were chosen because they affected the fewest number of student athletes.
May said all scholarships will be honored for those athletes who choose to stay at Lander. He said those who decide to transfer would, according to NCAA rules, be automatically eligible to compete as long as they would have been at Lander.
The remaining Lander teams are men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's tennis, baseball, softball and women's volleyball and women's cross country.
