Paine men win, but women lose



FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- Yari Scott's field goal with 36 seconds to play and Chris Neal's free throw with nine seconds left helped Paine College's Lions escape Fort Valley with a 74-72 victory over the Wildcats on Monday night.

Fort Valley's women forged a 14-point halftime lead and were never threatened in posting an 86-69 victory.

The Lions trailed 38-33 at halftime, but outscored the Wildcats 41-34 in the second half.

Fort Valley led by seven points with 17:09 to play and by five (58-53) with 8:22 to go.

But Paine began to whittle down the lead and after a 70-70 deadlock with 1:24 left, the Lions took over for good (71-70) on a McDaniel Young free throw.

Scott led the winners with 18 points, Anthony Robinson scored 12 and yanked down seven rebounds, and Young added 10 points. Juan McGhee paced Fort Valley with 18, Milan Kenley had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Tari Kellam added 11 points.

Tiffany Isaac led Paine's women with 21 points and Charlene Rutland added 10. Naterria Mitchell scored 22, LaQuita Mathis 20 and Crystal Hill 14 for the winners.

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Freshman LaToya Thomas scored 23 points and Jennifer Fambrough and Cynthia Hall each added 14 as No. 22 Mississippi State (13-2, 2-2 SEC) beat South Carolina.

Shaunzinski Gortman led South Carolina (10-6, 3-3) with 22 points.
