Building of course to begin

GRANITEVILLE - Construction of Sage Valley Golf Club, an 18-hole course, is set to begin in mid-February, according to Weldon Wyatt, majority owner of 7-Oaks LLC, which is developing the property on Bettis Academy Road.

Fazio Golf Course Design Inc. has been retained for the project.

"Fazio is recognized as probably the premier golf course designer in the country," Mr. Wyatt said.

Sage Valley Golf Club is not planned around a residential development, and membership will be by invitation only and limited to 400. Members of the club will be drawn from national and international levels, and up to six guest cottages and a clubhouse will be constructed for use by visiting members, he said. Mr. Wyatt also anticipates local membership.

The golf course will be located on 478 acres south of Interstate 20, between Bettis Academy and Old Vaucluse roads, with an entrance off Bettis Academy. The property was owned by Graniteville Co. for many years but was sold to Pru Timber Co.

"We've been looking for property convenient to an airport and to the interstate," Mr. Wyatt said.

He was also looking for prime forest land.

"It is also hard to find real estate that hasn't been timbered," Mr. Wyatt said.

He speculated that the timber on the tract had been selectively cut sometime in the 1930s but not much more recent than that.

"The trees on the property are 75 to 100 years old," he said.

In addition to tall pines, the area abounds in oak and hickory.
