A head-on collision a mile east of Highway 25 left one family without much hope for a good Christmas this year.
The crash, which occurred in October, left an Augusta father unable to return to work and a mother in need of help.
"My husband broke everything on the left side," the Augusta mother wrote.
Her husband's injuries were extensive. He fractured his pelvic bone, left leg and left arm. A piece of steel from the crash pierced his left leg.
But perhaps what is most devastating is that he cannot provide a merry Christmas this year for his five children. Ranging in age from 8 to 13, their mother wrote that before the accident her husband always was able to give the children a good Christmas. This year, she wrote, he won't be able to.
Her social worker referred her to The Empty Stocking Fund, and through the generous contributions of area residents, businesses and organizations, this family will receive assistance this year.
Applications for those wishing to be considered for assistance from the fund can be picked up at the guard station of The Augusta Chronicle on Broad Street; at the newspaper's South Carolina Bureau, 123 Pendleton St. N.W., Aiken; and at the Columbia County Bureau, 4143 Columbia Road, Martinez.
