Possible names for the Augusta team in arenafootball2 has been narrowed to three, franchise owner Frank Lawrence said on Wednesday.
The choices are: River Dogs, Alley Cats and Stallions.
"It will be one of those," Lawrence said.
The franchise owner solicited suggestions from fans.
The top choice actually was Mustangs, Lawrence said. That would have been an ideal name, the franchise owner said, since he also he owns Bobby Jones Ford and the Mustang is a popular car model. But Lawrence said he cannot use that name because it is already being used by a team in Wisconsin.
Possible team colors include red, black, white, gold, orange and blue.
The franchise still has to get clearance for the name and colors, Lawrence said, but he expects to announce the name as early as today.
The owner also has narrowed its choice for head coach to two veteran arena football coaches.
The franchise plans to hire a coach and general manager within two weeks.
"We're not going to dilly-dally," Lawrence said.
The team is expected to play its first home game next April at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center. Lawrence was awarded the franchise last month for the new league, which will serve as the Arena Football League's minor league (similar to baseball's Class AAA).
Af2 franchises are scheduled for Augusta; Birmingham; Charleston, S.C.; Greensboro, N.C.; Greenville, S.C.; Jacksonville; Huntsville, Ala.; Little Rock, Ark.; Norfolk, Va.; Pensacola, Fla.; Quad Cities, Iowa; Richmond; Roanoke, Va.; St. Charles, Mo.; Tallahassee, Fla.; and Tulsa, Okla.
