State insurance regulators and insurers are reminding consumers to protect property from storm damage and keep homeowner's insurance paperwork to expedite claim payment should damage occur.
Keep all insurance company and agent phone numbers on hand. Make copies of insurance policies, inventories of personal belongings, receipts, and photographs.
If damage occurs:
Contact insurance agent immediately: Your agent should provide claims forms and arrange for an insurance adjuster to visit your damaged home or automobile.
Guard against further damage: If your roof is damaged, for example, cover the affected area with a tarp or plywood to protect your property from further damage. Keep receipts -- your insurance company should reimburse you for your repair costs.
Secure your property: If damage is so severe you can no longer remain at home, remove all valuable items which can't be locked in a secure place. Some insurers write on-the-spot checks to customers for additional living expenses.
If you have trouble reaching your insurer, call the Commission's Consumer Services Hotline at (800) 656-2298 in Georgia between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Hearing-impaired people can call (800) 656-4031.
The number in South Carolina is (800) 768-3467.
