Why Sprawls won

Congratulations to respected businessman Don Sprawls for prevailing Tuesday against Aiken City Council incumbent Karen Papouchada in a hotly contested GOP primary contest. With no Democratic opposition in November, Sprawls is virtually councilman-elect.

Having served on the City Planning Commission, Sprawls does not come to his new post without government experience.

Considering that this District 3 race was the only one contested, election officials said the 26.4 percent turnout was unusually high.

Papouchada was done in by her pro-tax, anti-business record. Her re-election rhetoric, that she'd hold the line on fees and taxes, just wasn't credible. When the business community directed its resources to the Sprawls campaign, she was finished.
