Mother of three killed in wreck
An Orangeburg County, S.C., mother of three died in a weekend traffic accident while visiting Aiken County for a wedding, authorities said Sunday. She was the 31st traffic death in Aiken County this year.
Terwander Seawright, 29, of North, S.C., apparently was returning from a late-night bridal event when she wrecked her vehicle about 5 a.m. Saturday on Hollow Creek Road. She was driving alone toward Salley, Aiken County Coroner Sue Townsend said.
Evidence suggests Ms. Seawright was exceeding the posted speed limit and wasn't wearing her seat belt, the coroner said. Skid marks indicate she swerved off the right side of the road, then came back across the left side of the road.
The vehicle struck a tree on the passenger side, and Ms. Seawright was thrown into the back seat, Mrs. Townsend said.
Despite statewide efforts to encourage seat-belt usage, the coroner said people continue to die in accidents when they aren't wearing their belts.
"I don't know what else to say. If you go to Glenn's Automotive in Salley and look at the car, you will see that the driver seat survived the accident," Mrs. Townsend said. "The seat belt would have helped in this particular case."
Four indicted in alleged scam
AIKEN -- Three North Augusta members of the Irish Travelers and a local insurance agent have been indicted by an Aiken County jury in connection with an alleged insurance scam, according to the South Carolina Attorney General's Office.
Each of the four defendants faces 60 years in prison and fines up to $30,000.
"In too many segments of our society, insurance fraud has become a socially acceptable crime," Attorney General Charlie Condon said. "I only hope prosecutions such as these will send a message throughout South Carolina that we will not tolerate this kind of flagrant dishonesty."
Winnie C. Riley, Briget A. Sherlock and Nora F. Carroll, who all gave North Augusta post office addresses, were indicted Thursday on six counts each of presenting a false claim for payment. Insurance agent Henry Cribb, of 514 Siskin Circle in North Augusta, was indicted on the same charges.
All four were accused of presenting false claims to six insurance companies: Governmental Personnel Mutual Life Insurance Co., Kanawha Insurance Co., Guaranteed Trust Life Insurance Co., Baltimore Life Insurance Co., Central United Life Insurance Co. and Pioneer Life Insurance Co.
In addition, the three Irish Travelers were indicted on various charges of making a false statement or misrepresentation to the insurance companies, a felony carrying a possible maximum sentence of three years imprisonment and a fine of up to $50,000.
