CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Edwin Gonzalez scattered eight hits for his second shutout of the season, as the Charleston (W.Va.) Alley Cats blanked the Augusta GreenJackets 4-0 Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series at Watt Powell Park.
The Jackets managed only eight singles against Gonzalez (7-5), who didn't allow just one runner to reach third base. Also, Gonzalez lowered his South Atlantic League-leading ERA to 1.76.
Augusta starter and loser Josh Hancock (6-7) lasted six innings, allowing five hits and two runs.
Despite the loss, the Jackets maintained their four-game lead on second-place Macon in the race for the Southern Division's second-half title. Macon suffered an 8-6 loss to Asheville Thursday.
The Jackets and Alley Cats play game two of the series tonight at 7:15 at Watt Powell Park.
