The Augusta Heat are on fire.
The minor-league professional football team looks to remain undefeated when it meets the Valdosta Dawgs at 7 p.m., today at Evans High's Blanchard Stadium.
Augusta (4-0) is led by a defense that has allowed just 18 points in four games. The Heat defeated the South Carolina Seminoles 38-6 last week, and gave up the touchdown on an offensive fumble by quarterback Sal Cardella.
The offense, however, had plenty of room to make mistakes as it jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead. Cardella was 11-of-18 passing for 289 yards. Mike Holaren was the top receiver with four receptions for 112 yards.
Kicker Kraig Baker has nailed field goals of 40 yards or more in consecutive games.
Heat running back Jerry Davis, who ran for a score and caught a touchdown pass at South Carolina, was diagnosed with vertigo earlier this week and was treated and released from Medical College of Georgia Hospital on Thursday. Davis is second on the team in rushing, with 113 yards. Former Georgia back Dave Williams and former Georgia Southern back Roderick Russell are tied for the team lead with 116 yards rushing and three touchdowns apiece.
The visiting Dawgs are the International Football League's only winless team, but recently acquired eight players who have finished their Arena Football League seasons.
Augusta will continue its home stand when it plays host to the Carolina Twisters on Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. The Heat has a bye week the following week and will welcome the Golden Isles Sharks on Aug. 28.
