Mr. Abram Rutland



AIKEN -- Mr. Abram J. Rutland, 96, of 213 Laurens St., died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. John E. Wertz officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Lutheran Church Cemetery, Johnston.

Mr. Rutland, a native of Ridge Spring, had served as superintendent of Langley-Bath-Clearwater and Aiken Area 1 schools and Aiken County superintendent of education, guiding Aiken County through the construction of Savannah River Plant. He had received local, state and national awards. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Rutland, Richmond Hill, Ga.; a daughter, Jane Rutland Duckett, Aiken; a sister, Kathleen Rutland, Lexington; and six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be elders of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, c/o the Cemetery Fund, 1186 Mount Calvary Road, Johnston, SC 29832; or St. Paul Lutheran Church, c/o the Building Fund, 961 Trail Ridge Road, Aiken, SC 29803.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at George Funeral Home, Park Avenue.
