I attended the funeral of Columbia County firefighter Roy Mitchell. I knew him for his humor and dedication as a firefighter. I am sure those I saw along the route from Wesley United Methodist Church to Westover Memorial Park on his final ride aboard Engine No. 1 never knew him but the respect shown was truly amazing. People of all ages and all races stopped their cars to show their respect for someone who would save their life if needed.
I know the wait was uncomfortable in the heat of the sun, but the heat of a fire is far greater. Mr. Mitchell would have been proud of the people he loved and served.
