Bennett Distribution Services has announced plans to expand operations in Columbia County and build a new facility which could ultimately create 25 to 40 new jobs.
Bennett, which has five locations throughout the area, has leased the former LECO building on Old Belair Road and will move 10 of its Richmond County employees to the building within two months. Those employees are now located at the former Hydreco Inc. building on Tobacco Road which will soon be occupied by U.S. Battery when it moves operations and 120 jobs from Columbia County to Richmond County.
"We're looking at a place at Horizon South (Industrial Park in Grovetown), the Spec Building or we're talking about possibly building from the ground up," said Kevin King, president of the company, which employs 38. "We intend to use those facilities to go after new business."
A service company, Bennett is involved in supply chain management and logistics.
"We assist manufacturers in managing inventory and with transportation needs," Mr. King said. "Anything that involves inbound shipping to the manufacturer and outbound shipping of that product."
The company, which opened in Augusta one year ago, is part of Bennett International Group.
"Since we've started, we've just not had adequate space, so we've been doing it piece-meal and it's spread us out all over the place," Mr. King said. "But we intend to keep this space and do some other work with companies around here."
