SPRINGFIELD, Ga. -- Mr. George A. Chance Jr., a 20-year member of the Georgia House of Representatives, died Saturday, June 26, 1999, at his residence. He was 80.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Springfield United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Brooklet City Cemetery, Brooklet.
Mr. Chance, a native of Burke County, was a graduate of the Burke County school system and the University of Georgia. He taught and coached sports at schools in Effingham and Bulloch counties for 20 years, and he owned and operated Springfield Farm Supply for 18 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He served as a county commissioner for two years and was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1970, a seat he held for 20 years. In the state House of Representatives he served on the committees for education, natural resources, agriculture and consumer affairs, ways and means and appropriations.
He sponsored legislation providing a state health plan for teachers and placing Ebenezer Creek on the Georgia Scenic Rivers Act.
In 1998 a bridge on the Savannah River Parkway was named for Mr. Chance. He helped organize Farmers and Merchants Bank in Brooklet. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America on local and district levels for 45 years.
Mr. Chance was a member of Springfield United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board, joined United Methodist Men and served as a church conference delegate.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Sue McElveen Chance; and a daughter, Linda Sue Newiger, Smyrna.
