MCDONOUGH, Ga. -- Greenbrier's Wolfpack did its annual number on Henry County again, sweeping the Warhawks 11-7 and 8-4 in the Class AAA baseball playoffs on Friday.
Henry County, ranked No. 1 in the state coming into the series, hit 61 home runs during the regular season, but that didn't intimidate Greenbrier, who out-homered the `Hawks 5-4.
It was the third season in a row Greenbrier knocked Henry County out of the playoffs and the twin wins marked the seventh and eighth straight victories recorded by the Pack.
In the second game, Dallas Jones gave the home team a 4-0 lead by capping the first inning with a three-run homer off Hampton Rowland (8-4).
But the Wolfpack pecked away until the third when Jon Johnson hit the first pitch over the fence to cut the lead to 4-3. Two batters later, Rowland slammed a home run over the left field fence to tie it at 4.
Rowland, who struck out five, blanked the Warhawks the rest of the way,
"I think the best thing that happened to Hamp is that I left him alone and let him pitch," said Greenbrier coach Terry Holder. "He was using more than one pitch effectively and was able to keep the ball down."
In the first game, Bradley Key stayed undefeated and, while the Wolfpack didn't hit the ball hard at first, but the hits dropped in.
Dewayne Lowe blooped a double to short center, hustling all the way to second, and went to third on Key's soft liner over second base. He scored when Jon Johnson grounded into a double play.
Henry County bounced back 3when University of Georgia signee Jarrett Warren hit a 2-2 curve ball over the left field fence for a two-run hoer.
Greenbrier grabbed the lead in the top of the second and increased the margin to 7-2 in top of the third when Warren walked three straight with none out. Taylor Fletcher hit a soft grounder toward first and Todd Kelley let the ball dribble through for a two-run error.
Rowland hit a two-strike, two-out, two-run homer to left in the fourth.
Greenbrier will play the winner of the Ridgeland-Newton County series, day and time TBA.
