This day in the Millennium: April 9
1821: A dinner was held at Planters Hotel in honor of U.S. Sen. John Forsyth of Augusta; Thomas Cumming and Mayor Nicholas Ware hosted the dinner.

Book brings early settlement to life
Soon after Harold Maness and his wife Elaine helped organize the Beech Island Historical Society in the mid-1980s, Mr. Maness obtained the proof he had sought for years -- an old map that would give his hometown prominence in South Carolina colonial history.

Store links past, future
Max and Rebecca Ruben emigrated from Eastern Europe in the late 19th century, settled in Augusta and started a dry-goods store. They built a legacy that continues today -- Ruben's Department Store.
