Max and Rebecca Ruben emigrated from Eastern Europe in the late 19th century, settled in Augusta and started a dry-goods store. They built a legacy that continues today -- Ruben's Department Store.

Book brings early settlement to life
Soon after Harold Maness and his wife Elaine helped organize the Beech Island Historical Society in the mid-1980s, Mr. Maness obtained the proof he had sought for years -- an old map that would give his hometown prominence in South Carolina colonial history.
