CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Donald Hand scored a career-high 41 points, including seven of Virginia's 11 points in overtime, as the Cavaliers beat North Carolina State.
Two free throws by Hand with 4.2 seconds in regulation gave Virginia (14-12, 4-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 71-68 lead, but Ron Kelley of N.C. State (15-10, 6-7) gathered in a baseball pass in front of the Wolfpack bench and launched a 3-pointer that tied the game at the buzzer.
It was only the second career 3-pointer for the 6-foot-10 center, whose other 3-pointer came in an 82-72 victory over Virginia earlier in the season.
In the overtime, Kelley missed the second of two free throws with 1:48 left as Virginia held a 75-74 lead. A pair of free throws by Willie Dersch pushed Virginia's lead to 77-74 with 59 seconds left, and Kris Hunter blocked Anthony Grundy's shot in the lane with 40 seconds left.
Hand then hit 5-of-6 free throws as the Wolfpack was forced to foul, and Justin Gainey's 3-point try at the overtime buzzer was off the mark.
Chris Williams had 12 points for the Cavaliers and Chezley Watson added 10. Hunter had 11 rebounds and six blocks to go with his three points.
Kelley had a career-high 24 points and nine rebounds. Gainey added 15 points, Tim Wells 11 and Kenny Inge 10 for the Wolfpack. Damon Thornton grabbed 14 rebounds as the Wolfpack had a 42-31 rebounding advantage.
Virginia led 44-34 at the half on the strength of Hands' 24 points. Hand did not miss a shot in the first half, going 7-for-7 from the field with five 3-pointers and 5-for-5 from the line. He finished 11 of 17 from the field, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and 14 of 15 from the line.
The Cavaliers at one point made 22 consecutive free throws, going 28-for-33 for the game.
The victory was the Cavalier's 11th straight against the Wolfpack in University Hall.
