Act of courage 021299 - The Augusta Chronicle

Even as U.S. senators were caving in to the tyranny of popular opinion instead of defending the Constitution and the rule of law, a Colorado Boy Scout leader has demonstrated his courage with a symbolic defense of the Constitution.

The scout leader, Gerry Brewer, quit the organization and has turned in all his scouting awards because the Boy Scouts of America refused to revoke a character award given to President Clinton. Brewer -- also a past president of the Mesa County Republican Party -- says the scouting organization's refusal to take back the Silver Buffalo Award sparked his decision. He not only returned all of his awards but began a letter-writing campaign to gather opposition to the Boy Scouts as a group.
